Nothing is better on a hot summer day than ending it with something sweet. Ice cream is one of many delightful but indulgent treats that we probably shouldn’t have as often as we crave. Try these delectable treats instead to keep you healthy and on track.
Homemade Sorbets. With nothing but a food processor, freezer, and a little imagination, you can make sorbets better than anything you’ll find at the store. Start by picking your favorite soft fruits. Berries, melons, and other summer favorites are excellent choices. After removing the rinds and chopping into manageable chunks, freeze your fruit for at least four hours. Once frozen, take the fruit and use your food processor to blend until smooth. You can eat your sorbet now, or store in a freezer safe container for later.
Try these recipes or make your own!
Minty Cantaloupe Sorbet
8 cups of cubed frozen cantaloupe (2 medium cantaloupes)
2/3 cup of roughly chopped mint leaves
1 tablespoon of honey (optional)
Blend all ingredients together using a food processor or blender, stopping to scrape down the sides as needed. Serve immediately or freeze for later use.
Strawberry SorbetÂ
2 pounds of hulled, frozen strawberries
2 tablespoons of lemon juice
1 tablespoon of honey (optional)Â
Blend all ingredients together using a food processor or blender, stopping to scrape down the sides as needed. Serve immediately or freeze for later use.
TipsÂ
This dessert can be made as simple or complex as you want. The only limit is your imagination.
For a sweeter tooth, try adding a touch of honey or simple syrup. If your sorbet is too thick, try adding a little water or citrus juice to smooth things out. Freeze yogurt in an ice cube tray for a creamier dessert. Keep frozen fruit on hand for a quick and easy treat.
