Seven remedies for arthritis pain

An estimated 54 million adults have arthritis. Commonly defined as joint inflammation, arthritis is a prevalent problem but is not always well understood. It not only impacts the joints in the body but affects organs and skin. Arthritis comprises more than 100 different conditions. The symptoms of arthritis can be different amongst those diagnosed.

 

If you have arthritis, here are some remedies that can provide relief from the pain:

 

  1. Acupuncture- Acupuncture has proven to reduce arthritis pain. An ancient Chinese medical treatment, acupuncture involves inserting needles into specific points on the body. This process is believed to reroute energies and restore balance to the body. Search for an experienced acupuncturist if you wish to try this treatment.

  2. Herbal treatment- Many herbal products like devil’s claw, bromelain, ginkgo, Boswellia, and stinging nettle can be predominantly used to reduce joint pain. Consult a doctor first if you wish to consume them.

  3. Weight loss- Half of the body’s weight falls on the knees. Excessive weight means more pressure on joints and knees, resulting in more knee pain. Exercise and eat healthy to lose weight and reduce the strain on knees and joints.

  4. Meditation- Studies indicate that meditation can reduce stress and help people soothe their joints, thereby, reducing arthritis pain.

  5. Massage- Regular massage can reduce the stiffness and pain in joints and knees and increase their motion range.

  6. Hot and cold therapy- Taking a hot water shower in the morning can relax the stiffness in the joints. During the night, use a heating pad or electric blanket for keeping the bones relaxed. Cold therapy is ideal for reducing joint pain. Use a gel pack or frozen vegetable wrapped in a towel and place it over the joints to get quick relief.

  7. Add turmeric to the food- Turmeric, a yellow spice, is known to contain a chemical called curcumin that helps in reducing arthritis pain.
